Eleonora Nucciarelli - Tourist Guide in Florence and Tuscany

Pisa’s Hidden Beauty

Pisa boasts one of the wonders of the world, the Leaning Tower, overlooking Piazza dei Miracoli (Miracle Square) a unique complex that is, in itself, worth the journey. And yet this lively town has much more to offer. Pisa has been the Queen of the Mediterranean Sea, the cradle of Tuscan architecture, the hometown of scientific giants Galileo Galilei and Leonardo Fibonacci and a storied and excellent university centre. The rich past of the town is reflected in its variegated historical sights. This half-day tour allows you to grasp the essence of the town.

We depart from Santa Maria Novella railway station in Florence and take a regional train to Pisa. During the journey we will be able to admire the landscape that inspired painters like Leonardo da Vinci and talk about the history of Tuscany.

Once in Pisa, a pleasant walk will take us to the riversides flanked by elegant colourful palaces and an exquisite Gothic gem: the church of Santa Maria della Spina. We then head to the heart of the town and the sumptuous Piazza dei Cavalieri. After a short break in one of the local cafes, we will stroll through the lively market area and the University district.

By the time we reach Piazza dei Miracoli (Miracle Square), we will already be familiar with the history of Pisa and enabled to better appreciate the art of the town’s spiritual centre. You will enjoy the refined architecture of the Cathedral, the sober elegance of the Baptistery and the masterpieces of the medieval sculptors who pioneered the Renaissance. We end the tour under the shade of the Leaning Tower.
